Off the Beaten Path - Dad's Final Lesson
(Dad with Meg)
Last Wednesday my 83 year old father chose to "consciously die" after being ill for quite some time. He stopped all things medical, food, and drink. My sister, daughter, nephew and mother have been caring for him in his home. He has lingered far longer than was thought possible as he is still alive 6 days later as I write this column. Each day that passes, for me, is spent in awareness of what is going on around me as I watch the hours pass, get updated, and wait for the call that says he has died. In doing this I realize how much of life I hurry through, unaware of all the detail that makes up the day.
Somehow this seems important to share this week. I want to make each day count as my end will come as it inevitably does for us all.
Peace .....
(At 1:50 on Tuesday, February 18th I received the call ... Dad has died.)
